Making Grids for Self-Portrait Project

As part of our self-portrait project, you will be required to create a grid on your drawing paper. The grid should be on paper that is 8.5" x 11", and the grid measurements should be 1" x 1". This means that you will have a 1/2" remainder on one side of the page.

Start out by measuring every inch from the left side of your paper, and making a dot to mark your measurements. SLIDE THE RULER DOWN YOUR PAGE, and do the same thing at the bottom (this makes sure your remainder stays on the right side). Connect your marks using light pressure on your pencil and making sure you have straight lines.

Next, do the same thing along the long side of your paper. Connect those dots as well. Keep your lines light and straight. At the end you should have a grid of 1" x 1" boxes, with a remainder of 1/2" on the right.

Take your time on this, and everything will work out OK. If you rush it, if you're not careful with your measurements, or if you complani that you can't do this, you're going to have a tough time being successful on this project (and it's a BIG one).

For inspiration, here's pictures of my 5 year old daughter making a grid today without any instruction. I was in another room and came out to find her doing this. If she can do it, I have faith that you can too.
